Domestic Dispute Sentencing Brings Closure

  • Uncategorized

A Minnesota woman has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison following a fatal domestic dispute that occurred in 2020, a case that has gone through years of legal review and retrials. The sentencing has renewed public discussion around self-defense claims, jury instructions, and how serious criminal charges are resolved. Situations like this often highlight why working with our Maple Grove, MN criminal defense lawyer teams can be essential when someone faces life-altering accusations.

Stephanie Louise Clark, 35, pleaded guilty in October to one count of first-degree manslaughter for the shooting death of her boyfriend, Donjuan Butler. As part of the plea agreement, a second-degree murder charge was dismissed. Clark was sentenced to 86 months in prison, significantly less than the more than 25-year sentence she originally received in 2021 after being convicted of second-degree murder.

That earlier conviction was overturned in 2023 when the Minnesota Court of Appeals ruled that jurors had not been properly instructed on the law. The appellate court’s decision granted Clark a new trial, setting the stage for renewed legal proceedings. Rather than proceed to a second jury trial, Clark entered a guilty plea to manslaughter.

According to court records, Clark claimed she acted in self-defense during a volatile argument. She alleged that Butler had been abusive, that he struck her, and that he threatened her life while holding a gun to her head. Clark said she fired the weapon in response, resulting in Butler’s death. While the court ultimately accepted a reduced charge, the case underscores how complicated and fact-sensitive domestic violence and homicide cases can be, particularly when self-defense is asserted.

How Criminal Defense Representation Matters

Cases involving violent offenses, domestic disputes, and self-defense claims demand careful legal analysis and strategic advocacy. Our criminal lawyers regularly see how evidence, witness testimony, and jury instructions can dramatically affect outcomes. Even when someone believes they acted to protect themselves, the legal system requires that those claims be clearly supported under Minnesota law.

Our criminal justice lawyers help clients understand the charges they face, potential defenses, and the long-term consequences of convictions or plea agreements. From pretrial motions to appellate review, every stage of a case matters. As this case shows, errors in jury instructions or trial procedure can result in convictions being overturned years later.

Our defense lawyers also work to make sure that mitigating factors—such as a history of abuse or credible self-defense claims—are fully presented. These details can influence whether charges are reduced, dismissed, or resolved through negotiated pleas. In some situations, individuals may initially rely on our public defenders, but later seek additional representation to explore appeals or post-conviction relief.

Having guidance from our Maple Grove criminal defense attorneys can make a significant difference when it comes to dealing with serious felony charges. Criminal cases are not just about legal statutes; they are about people, context, and making sure that constitutional rights are protected at every step.

About Me

I never expected to be called to work in criminal defense.  For many years I found work as a prosecutor fulfilling.  But over time that changed.  Rather than making a difference, I was a cog in the machine.  Cases stopped feeling like people and became names on paper.   And I realized that often the true difference makers in the system are the defense attorneys.

I founded Archambault Criminal Defense because I want to use my skills to help people.  Because I want my cases to be about people and not just names on paper.  Because I know I have unique expertise and experience that can truly help people move forward and get on with their lives.
